Winter Is Coming... Are You Ready?
With forecasters predicting a colder than normal winter this year, it's important to take basic steps to avoid downtime and wasted costs. Don't get snowed under by burst pipes, furnace failure, high heating bills, slips and falls, and other winter hazards -- prepare your home and business today.
Winter Preparedness Basics
- Schedule regular HVAC system maintenance by a qualified contractor.
- Replace air filters on a monthly basis for maximum furnace efficiency.
- Install humidifiers to maintain the proper level of humidity. If indoor air is too dry, it can impair the body's natural protection against airborne microbes, including cold and flu viruses.
- Use programmable thermostats to control heating costs.
- Use caulking and weather stripping around windows to seal cracks and gaps.
- Insulate water pipes.
- Use ice melt/sand on walkways and parking lots to avoid slips and falls.
- Repair any dripping taps. A slow trickle of water can freeze and block the pipe.
- Move inventory and equipment above flood level if your building is prone to flooding.
- Install air doors between offices and warehouses to keep warm air from escaping.
- Stock up on flu prevention products to help control the spread of H1N1 and other viruses.
